Learn How HoLEP Provides Long Term Relief For BPH

HoLEP for Enlarged Prostate (BPH) with Raised PSA Chart

How HoLEP Helped a Patient With Enlarged Prostate Symptoms

A 64-year-old man struggled with weak urine flow, frequent night urination, and side effects from medication. With his enlarged prostate causing significant symptoms, HoLEP surgery was recommended.

He underwent an ejaculatory-sparing HoLEP and was discharged the next day. After surgery, he could fully empty his bladder, his PSA dropped to 0.48 ng/ml, and his symptoms improved without major side effects.

Why HoLEP Has One of the Lowest Reoperation Rates Among BPH Surgeries

Most BPH procedures come with a risk of needing repeat surgery — some as high as 50%. HoLEP stands out with a reoperation rate of less than 1%, making it a reliable long-term option even for larger prostates. It delivers results comparable to traditional surgery like TURP, but with fewer side effects and a much lower chance of needing a second procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HoLEP safe?

Yes. HoLEP is considered one of the safest and most effective surgical treatments for BPH. Dr Lie is one of Singapore’s pioneers in HoLEP and has performed hundreds of these procedures, including for patients with very large prostates or on blood-thinning medications.

How long does the procedure take?

The surgery usually takes 1–2 hours, depending on the size of the prostate. Most patients stay in the hospital for 1–2 days, and the catheter is typically removed within 24–48 hours.

How long is the recovery after HoLEP?

Most men return to light activities within a few days and feel significant improvement in urinary flow within weeks. Full recovery and return to all normal activities, including exercise, usually takes 2–4 weeks.

Who is suitable for HoLEP?

HoLEP is suitable for most men with moderate to severe urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate, including very large prostates. Dr Lie will assess your prostate size, health condition, and goals to recommend if HoLEP is the right option for you.

Will treatment affect my sexual function?

HoLEP does not affect erections or sexual desire. However, retrograde ejaculation (semen flowing back into the bladder instead of out) is a common side effect. This does not affect sexual pleasure but may impact fertility.

Is a referral needed to see Dr Lie?

No referral is needed. You can book a consultation directly with Dr Lie, our HoLEP specialist.

Is HoLEP surgery covered by insurance or Medisave?

Yes. Since HoLEP is a medically necessary procedure for BPH, it is usually Medisave and insurance claimable. Our clinic staff can assist with claims and paperwork.

How is HoLEP different from TURP?

TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) uses an electrical loop to remove prostate tissue, while HoLEP uses a laser. HoLEP can treat larger prostates, causes less bleeding, and offers longer-lasting results compared to TURP.
